Chapter 66 The Missing Persons
Chapter 66 The Missing Persons
Inside the cell, two figures were locked in combat, wielding wooden swords, the creaking and cracking of the clashing blades filling the air.
Until a sudden "crack" sound, a wooden knife broke.
Kane stared at the broken wooden sword in his hand, his eyes flickering slightly as he silently reviewed the situation.
Although he caught the swordsman's strikes every time, his body was no longer what it used to be.
But his opponent always managed to hit the same spot on his wooden sword with pinpoint accuracy during the exchange.
In a real fight, his blade would probably have shattered long ago.
"You don't really think you can beat me in swordsmanship after such a short period of learning, do you?"
Seeing Kane's displeasure, Velanther's lips twitched strangely, and he said in a complicated tone:
"I have never seen a beginner learn as quickly as you."
Seeing that Kane was still pondering his shortcomings in the match, he sighed softly and waved his hand:
"That's enough. There's nothing more I can teach you. The rest is up to you."
He was amazed by the temporary student, and his feelings were complicated.
On one hand, Kane is a Nord, from the country he hates most.
On the other hand, he had never seen anyone with such talent for scimitars.
Any skill can be mastered quickly, and problems that have occurred before will never be repeated.
Kane nodded his thanks, his tone sincere:
"Thanks. I'll take my leave now."
As Vilanser watched his retreating figure, he suddenly spoke:
"With your talent, if you wish to go to the Elven Court of Susas and serve a nobleman..."
Perhaps we can obtain the original version of this scimitar technique.
"The original version..."
Kane paused slightly, his gaze shifting subtly.
He didn't ask any more questions, but simply kept those words in mind.
Before leaving, he stood with his foot on the edge of the cell door, and without turning his head, said:
"I will deliver your message to Ms. Theresa."
Upon hearing this, Vilanser's dejected face finally regained its spirit.
He watched Kane's retreating figure, a faint smile playing on his lips.
"Whatever your purpose in learning to use a knife, don't die before you see her."
……
Kane walked out of the cell, instructed the guards to improve Velanther's meals, and then left.
This is a small reward, after all, it's thanks to the guidance of this temporary teacher and my own hard work.
His scimitar skills have reached level 6, and with continued practice, they can steadily improve.
When Kane arrived at his doorstep, he immediately saw Shar waiting there.
She was dressed as a lantern bearer today, carrying a longbow on her back, but her beautiful figure was still undeniable.
She only smiled when she saw Kane.
"Have you been waiting long?"
"No, I just arrived."
Kane nodded and was about to open the door when his male neighbor next door happened to push the door open and come out.
Seeing the two of them pause for a moment, and when their eyes met Kane's, he made a "awesome" gesture.
Kane knew the other party had misunderstood, shook his head slightly, and offered no explanation, but Shar was somewhat puzzled.
"It's probably because it's rare for women to come to my house."
Kane answered casually.
Upon hearing this, Shar's expression brightened considerably.
Kane looked at her, thought for a moment, and decided not to mention that Sienna and Zena had also visited.
After entering the house, Kane poured Shar a cup of bitter root tea, and the two sat facing each other.
"How's the investigation going? Any leads?"
Shar nodded and took out a striped piece of paper from her pocket and handed it over.
"As you predicted, four Dharma apprentices have recently gone missing."
Kane took the paper, scanned the name on it, and frowned.
"Didn't those important figures in the Mage Tower report this to the sheriff?"
"They don't care at all."
Shar shook her head, a hint of sarcasm in her voice.
"In the eyes of those high-ranking mages, apprentices are nothing more than disposable items that can be replaced at any time, and some even pay high tuition fees to be able to audit courses."
They assumed that the four students either couldn't afford the tuition or were simply too lazy to work and had run away.
Kane tapped the table lightly with his fingertips.
"Have you checked their address?"
"I've been there, but I didn't find anything interesting."
Shar sighed.
"Most of these apprentices live in the fifth and sixth districts."
Less than a week after they disappeared, the landlord had cleared out all their belongings, leaving not a single clue.
Kane pondered for a moment:
Why do you think they disappeared?
Shar frowned: "Why?"
Do you remember that body in the sewer?
Shar frowned in thought, then slowly said:
"You mean... someone underwent a stigmata ritual and became a half-demon?"
"That's one possibility."
Kane nodded.
"These apprentices are not valued by the Mage Tower, which indicates that they have limited talent. There is a high possibility that their aptitude can be changed through the Holy Mark Ritual..."
However, the target of the Stigmata Ritual is the chaotic abyss, and they may, like Ange, undergo physical mutations and be forced to hide.
Shar frowned, but Kane's next words stunned her even more.
"There's another possibility—they were killed."
"Killed? Why?" Shar suddenly looked up.
"The gifts of the abyss are inherently strange; some demons' abilities are derived from hunting and becoming stronger."
Kane recalled the rumor about the ghoul and said:
"If a demon child can hunt down other half-demons and seize their memories and abilities..."
Do you think he'll let these apprentices, who have mastered basic magic and might even have some experience with first-level spells, go?
Shar instantly realized what was happening, and her expression became even more serious:
"You mean, the killer is plundering the magical knowledge of mage apprentices by hunting them down?"
Shar's expression grew increasingly serious.
Kane looked at her and said:
"Therefore, you should refrain from investigating this matter for the time being."
Why?
"Frequent investigations are likely to attract attention."
"A demon child who can change his appearance, possesses various magic tricks, and even first-level spells—are you confident you can handle him?"
Shar looked serious:
"Kane, I know you're worried about my safety."
But the lantern bearer's oath was "I swear by the lantern to burn away the abyss," and I cannot abandon the investigation.
If I were afraid, I would never have infiltrated the demon cult's stronghold in the first place.
Kane softened his tone:
"I know your beliefs... but do you remember the last time we hunted the Carrion Crawler?"
Shar remained silent.
At the time, her team fought a bitter battle to no avail, and even asked several second-tier captains for help. In the end, it was Kane's team that easily dealt with the mutated monster.
She was deeply impressed by this incident.
"I will handle this matter. If you need help, I won't hesitate to ask you."
Kane looked at her:
"I'm requesting to temporarily withdraw from the investigation as a friend. Is that alright?"
Shar lowered her eyes, remained silent for a moment, and finally answered in a low voice:
"Yes, but I won't give up completely."
If your actions do not make progress, I will reopen the investigation.
"rest assured."
Kane watched her get up and leave, and breathed a sigh of relief.
What he feared most was that Shar, with his obsessive sense of justice, would rush ahead recklessly.
Even he must be careful dealing with a demon child who may possess multiple spells.
After Shar left, Kane sat alone at the table, his fingertips tapping the surface unconsciously.
The mastermind's target was clearly those unsuccessful mage apprentices.
If I were to disguise myself as such an apprentice... would it be possible to lure out the other party?
He pondered for a while, then stopped tapping with his fingertips.
Perhaps... I need a new identity.
